What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is inflammation in the tissues surrounding the gums and teeth. The disease develops when bacteria and saliva combine in the mouth and form plaque, overtime if it’s not brushed away it hardens and forms tartar. Their bodies respond by sending white blood cells to fight the bacteria but in turn releases enzymes that break down gum tissue. This can lead to tooth decay and loss.

How do I know if my pet has periodontal disease?

It is quite easy to spot dental problems in your pet if you check their mouth regularly. A major sign that is often ignored is bad breath. “Doggy breath” is not something that your loyal companion should have to live with. Other signs of dental disease include:

• Blood on their chew toys
• Chewing on only one side of the mouth
• Yellow or brown buildup around their teeth
• Swollen, red or bleeding gums
• Loose teeth
• Excessive drooling

How can I care for my pet’s oral health?

1. Brush their teeth regularly. Ideally you should brush your pet’s teeth daily. There are pet specific toothpaste and brushes safe for your furry friend.
2. Take them to the vet for professional dental cleanings. Regular brushing will not remove all the hardened plaque that may be on your pet’s teeth.
3. Give them foods that promote good oral health. There are special foods that can clean your pet’s teeth as they chew.
4. Provide them with safe chew toys that won’t damage their teeth.
